This is the discussion thread for the tower update Chaining Storm (1736).
This tower is an update to Chaining Storm v42 (id:1603)

Creator's comments for this update:

- Chaining Storm requires 100 Mana now to prevent insane triggering without any help
- dead creeps gives +20 mana
- Strong Wind now does 10% of towers attack damaage (can still crit 1 time)

Someone PLEASE check my spelling:
1) @long_explain=If a creep dies while under the effect of Strong Wind its living energy is converted in |cffFFFF80+20|r mana and boost this tower's abilities.
2) There is a chance to attack all creeps around the main target with a Chaining Storm for the cost of some mana.
3) Whenever this tower attacks, it has a |cffFFFF8025%|r chance to cast a Chaining Storm at the position of the attacked creep for the cost of |cffFFFF80100|r mana.

+ code shortening
+ changed mana values

Yes, this tower was designed to get very strong, to finally have a core storm tower.

The mana triggering limitation hurts hart but seems necessary.

Just +1 thing:

the mana regeneration +0,01/sec per level is too low.
Base mana regeneration is 10/sec, so why not add +0,5/s up to +1/s?

I really like Chaining Storm, but I agree this tower should be nerfed. It has too much scaling with too many different things to become completely OP and autowin the game. The two main problems I see are:

1) The physical damage aura, it's scaling with slows in ridiculous ways. If you don't have any slows, you will lose the game. If you have 95% slow (e.g. through the holy trinity Cold Obelisk / Icy Core / Igloo), you will instantly evaporate anything that walks into range (especially if you have many creeps from -autospawn 1 or at least time difficult waves to come together when you are struggling). The extremes are too far apart. It's a cool concept to scale this tower's damage through slow effects, but remember that any tower in the game deals more damage with more attack time, so you have to be careful if you double-dip on that (especially if you increase uptime AND dps exponentially, without even counting the vulnerability effect). An aura effect that deals ~1000% of the tower's attack damage every second while dealing no damage at all without these slows is simply insane. By nerfing the aura and increasing the base damage, you could reduce the difference between these extremes while also buffing it a little against bosses, which are really hard to kill without slows right now.

2) This tower has a strong support effect through the storm / astral / ice vulnerability proc, but it's literally impossible to build Chaining Storm as only a support tower. I tried it a few times, blasting stuff with my +390k carry and having a random unoiled Chaining somewhere for slow / vulnerability support. At some point (before bonus wave) it simply starts catching up to my main tower and getting kills way too much even without damage buffs, only through the tornado procs (especially on mass waves). I think that's a little too extreme for a tower that has this much support value. It simply does too much damage to even be used as a support, maybe while nerfing the aura, nerfing the multiplier per creeps hit would be in order too.

I think with the right values, this tower could be adjusted to stay very strong (keep the infinite damage stacking if you will), but not feel like you are completely cheesing the entire game because you build stuff you want to build anyway to support it (i.e. slows). E.g. tripling the base damage and reducing the aura to 1% dmg per 1% slow would still be great.

At level 25, each stack of Strong Wind adds 1.125x multiplier (only Strong Winds' slow counts for the damage). So it maxes out at 1687.5% of current attack damage every second after 15 seconds.

If a creep spends 10 seconds in this tower's range, it will take ~56x this tower's attack damage from Strong Winds alone.

The level bonus "+5 damage per 1% slow" @25 equals Storm Power bonus from 2500 creeps killed.

A good starting point would be to remove the 10x multiplier from "10% damage per 1% slow". Tooltips are also wrong; "+5 damage per 1% slow" actually means 5% of 10%, so @20 it deals 20% damage per 1% slow.
